The news of Cam Akers going down to a torn Achilles right before the start of training camp was devastating. I personally had him as a potential breakout candidate coming into this season as his role and usage in the Rams offense was expected to grow. I managed to get him in one league this offseason myself but now, like many who have already drafted early, will have to make some moves to fill the void Cam Akers injury has left on your fantasy rosters. To start, if you didn’t cover yourself by drafting Akers backup/handcuff Darrell Henderson... Don’t kick yourself too much.
There are many ways to attack a fantasy draft. If you managed to draft running back deep, you may have covered yourself by adding substantial depth like maybe a Jets’ Michael Carter or San Francisco’s Trey Sermon. Whatever the case, if you have depth at the position you might not need to make a move just yet. If you still feel like you do, check other fantasy teams and see where they have a weakness. Use that to create a trade that will allow you to get a running back off of the squad. It may be difficult, but if the offer is good it will give the other fantasy manager something to think about.
If you’re planning to target Darrell Henderson, expect to pay a hefty price if someone is willing to deal him. Per ProFootball Focus NFL writer Doug Kyed, the Rams are expecting to move forward with Darrell Henderson as the starter for the 2021 season. While I still feel like they will make a move to add some depth to the position just in case, Henderson’s fantasy value is going to rise as we head into August. Per FantasyFootballCalculator, Henderson’s fantasy value in PPR formats is currently at 9.09. With the role solely for Henderson to lose, expect that price to continue to trend upward.
The next thing to check for is the waiver wire as there is another potential option on the roster in running back Xavier Jones gets a bump up. Jones was the projected number three running back on the team before the Akers injury knocked him out for the season. If Henderson should be injured, Jones would slide is as the running back to own. If you’re in a FAAB league, you may have to put up a pretty penny to get him. In one league, I dropped a quarter of my FAAB in a $100 FAAB league. In another league with a $2k FAAB (don’t ask), one fantasy manager dropped $101 in FAAB to get Jones. Just be prepared to shell up some coin to add Jones to your fantasy roster.
Another possibility is that the Rams could add running back via free agency or trade from another team. The options available on free agency vary. Guys like Todd Gurley and Le’Veon Bell are still floating around out there. If I’m the Rams I’d probably wait for a guy to get cut like Mark Ingram has been rumored to be on the chopping block with the Houston Texans or make a trade to the Colts for Marlon Mack. Mack is the extra man in that roster as Jonathan Taylor is the man with Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins with established roles of their own.
The Rams could still make a move to add a guy even if it is for depth so it’s still a situation to monitor.
