Fantasy Football: The Phinest Week 1 Fantasy Sleepers

Football is finally back! With football being back comes one of the best parts of the football season, setting fantasy lineups again. Just because it’s Week 1 doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be trying your best to find sleepers and win your matchup and that’s what I’m here for. Starting this week and for the rest of the season, I’ll be bringing you sleepers each week that can help you win your matchups.

QB Trevor Lawrence (JAX) vs HOU

Lawrence was picked #1 for a reason and he’ll get to show why against a weak Houston defense. Houston definitely didn’t get better in the offseason, but on the other had, the Jaguars did. Expect Lawrence to lead the Jags to a win with their new and improved offense.

RB Trey Sermon (SF) vs DET

The rookie against Detroit should be a great matchup come Sunday. Detroit was one of the worst against the run last year, and San Francisco has one of the best schemes to run the ball. Mostert might get most of the carries, but I see Sermon as a sneaky flex play or Jamaal Williams type player that could vulture some touches.

RB Gus Edwards (BAL) vs LVR

The Gus Bus will finally have the reigns to the Ravens backfield after many injuries. He’ll get to show off his talents against a Raiders defense that ranked 4th worst against the run. Expect him to get a good amount of carries and goal-line work.

*Update! Gus Edwards has torn his ACL and will miss the rest of the 2021 season, per ESPN’s Insider Adam Schefter.

WR Terrace Marshall Jr (CAR) vs NYJ

Yet another rookie makes this list against a weak Jets secondary. Marshall shouldn’t be your WR1 but could be another good flex play. Darnold’s revenge game can’t come soon enough, and I’d expect Joe Brady’s passing scheme to help him win. Teddy Bridgewater was able to support 3 relevant fantasy receivers and I think Darnold can too.

WR Antonio Brown (TB) vs DAL

Not only a weekly sleeper, but a sleeper for the rest of the year is the 3rd option in Tampa. Brown is only a few years removed from being one of the league’s best receivers, and he should perform well against a weak Cowboys defense. The fact that the Cowboy’s secondary has to cover Evans and Godwin also opens more up for Brown and gives him a great matchup.

TE Tyler Higbee (LAR) vs CHI

Ahhh Tyler Higbee, the TE with the supposed breakout year last year and a final finish of TE16. Higbee has a big chance in week 1 to redeem himself from last year against the Bears. The Rams now should have an improved offense with the addition of Stafford, and the Bears gave up the 3rd most points to TEs last year.

K Kaimi Fairbairn (HOU) vs JAX

Something I like to think of when analyzing kickers is what offenses will struggle to score and even move the ball down the field. Those things are something that Houston is going to have problems with come this season, and Fairbairn should profit. He also has a great matchup with Jacksonville who gave up the 3rd most points to kickers last year.

DEF Denver Broncos vs NYG

What’s not to like about a game against the team that gave up the third-most points to defenses last year, plus a better defense overall? Expect the Broncos defense to put some pressure on Danny Dimes come Sunday. The dynamic duo of Von Miller and Bradley Chubb should create some pressure on Jones and exploit the Giants’ weak O-Line.
